Do Not Be Deceived
In this sermon on James 1:12–18, Pastor Tony reminds us that when trials come, we must not be deceived about the nature of temptation or the nature of God. Temptation does not come from God, but from the sinful desires within our own hearts. Sin makes promises it cannot keep. It promises satisfaction and life, but ultimately leads to death. James reminds us that God is altogether different. He is holy, good, generous, and unchanging. Every good and perfect gift comes from Him, and He has shown us His goodness most clearly by giving us new life through Jesus Christ. When temptation comes, we can resist its lies and trust the God who never changes. And when we do fall, we can look to Christ, knowing there is forgiveness, grace, and power to change in Him.
How To Respond To Trials
Trials are hard. They can leave us discouraged, overwhelmed, and wondering what God is doing. James does not ask us to pretend that our suffering does not hurt. Instead, he helps us see our trials in light of what God is doing through them. In James 1:1–11, we are reminded that God uses even difficult seasons to strengthen our faith, produce steadfastness, and make us more like Christ. And when we do not know what to do, God invites us to come to Him for wisdom. He is generous, and He does not shame us for needing His help. In this sermon, Pastor Tony Doppke encourages us to think clearly, ask trustingly, and boast rightly when trials come, resting not in our circumstances but in the riches we have in Christ and looking to Jesus, who endured suffering for our salvation.
